Oneoff Is a Real Pipeline
The first time a task shape appears, you do not know whether it is a pattern. Naming a pipeline at that moment feels organized, but it converts a guess into permanent catalog furniture. Soon the catalog fills with single-use names whose only difference is the noun in the original request.
A permanent oneoff pipeline is the disciplined alternative. It has a real template, a real required-stage contract, and a real record. What it lacks is a claim that this shape deserves reuse. The task-specific notes carry the unusual parts while the workshop supplies the ordinary execution and proof spine.
Treating oneoff as second class creates perverse pressure. Operators invent a category to make important work look legitimate, then future tasks get forced through that category to justify its existence. The taxonomy begins driving the work instead of describing it. A first-class oneoff removes that incentive.
The word “oneoff” describes expected recurrence, not quality, risk, or rigor. A one-time legal memo may require more review than a daily thumbnail export. A one-time data repair may have stricter evidence than a named pipeline. Review defaults and required stages remain explicit row properties rather than being inferred from the label.
The Honest Default
Route the first occurrence through oneoff with complete notes. Keep the trail. If a second task later shares stable instructions, stages, and review policy, compare the two records and promote only the common shape. This makes the first run evidence for design instead of a rehearsal for a pipeline you invented in advance.
