Waystone Quest

Updated: 2026-07-16

Build a travel companion that remembers, not an itinerary app that forgets

The origin story of Waystone — Dad's own travel-domain engine, the travel sibling of the image engine Ember and the music engine Bonfire. Why you build a companion that carries the memory of every past journey instead of renting an itinerary app that starts each trip from zero, and what every architectural choice teaches about owning your own memory.

Waystone is not an itinerary app, not a map with pins, not a note-taking tool with a travel folder. It is an independent engine that owns structured travel state — journeys, plans, days, places, routes, recommendations, decisions, and the living record of what actually happened — while cwkPippa remains the only owner of the brain. This quest walks that engine end to end: the three defining sentences (conversation is planning; structured state is its durable memory; geography is a projection of the same state), the consultation-first bet, the one-state-many-projections geography from globe to footstep, the four-way separation of plan, revision, actual, and reflection, the local-first field capture that commits before any network, Carve turning a rough plan — even a photo of Mom's OneNote — into a reviewable scaffold, the reuse-before-invention discipline that binds to a cwkPippa conversation instead of growing a second brain, and the closing idea that history compounds so the fourth journey begins with the memory of the first three. It was conceived mid-trip in Switzerland, on an iPhone, and every invariant carries a field bruise. Conceptual open-sourcing, not a repo you clone.

Tracks

  1. 01🧭The Waystone

    0/4 lessons

What it is, where it was born, and why it exists

Before any architecture, the shape. Waystone is the travel-domain engine of the cwkPippa family — the sibling of the image engine Ember, the music engine Bonfire, and the rest. This track sets the frame: what Waystone actually owns, the field where it was conceived, where it sits among its siblings, and the build-don't-rent bet that a travel companion should remember every journey instead of forgetting each one.

  2. 02💬Conversation Is Planning

    0/4 lessons

The consultation-first bet — you plan by talking, not by filling a form

The first defining sentence, taken seriously. In Waystone, Pippa Consultation is the home surface, not a side panel bolted onto a conventional itinerary board. This track works through what that means: conversation as the primary interface, the way a spoken change materializes into durable state with provenance, the strict line between a recommendation and a decision, and why Pippa retrieves relevant context instead of drowning every turn in every past trip.

  3. 03🌐One State, Many Projections

    0/5 lessons

The polymorphism heart — globe, map, and lens are views of one canonical state

The third defining sentence: geography is a projection of the same travel state, from globe to footstep. This is the track where Waystone's object-orientation shows most clearly. One canonical travel state sits underneath; the globe, the journey map, the place lens, the itinerary, and the logs are all views that render it and none of them owns a separate copy of the truth. Planned and actual geometry ride as separate layers, the map stores nothing of its own, and adding a new view is just adding another reader.

  4. 04Plan, Revision, Actual, Reflection

    0/4 lessons

Four temporal truths, never collapsed into one record

The second defining sentence — structured state is durable memory — has a temporal spine. A journey is not one record that gets edited over time; it is four distinct truths held side by side: what Dad intended at departure, how the plan changed along the way, what actually happened, and how it was remembered afterward. This track works through the journey lifecycle, the immutable departure baseline that Start Logging freezes, and the hardest rule of a memory system — a retrospective must never rewrite what was known at the time.

  5. 05📍Capture in Motion

    0/5 lessons

Local-first field capture — commit the thought before the network exists

The other half of durable memory: getting the moment in while you are moving. The Switzerland field lesson is that travel logging cannot assume time, posture, attention, or keyboard patience. This track is the mobile capture contract — leave a breadcrumb in seconds, commit it locally before any network, keep captured truth and intended truth separate, sample location only in the foreground, and treat capture and later assembly as two distinct phases with two different interaction budgets.

  6. 06🪨Carve: Rough Stone In

    0/4 lessons

Rough plan in, waystone out — Pippa normalizes without inventing

Real trips do not begin as clean data. They begin as a messy pasted plan, a wall of notes, or a photograph of Mom's OneNote table. Carve is the contract for turning that rough stone into a shaped scaffold: preserve the exact sources before the brain touches them, let Pippa normalize the mess into the day-section grammar, present it as a reviewable proposal that only Accept persists, and surface every unknown as an honest TBD instead of an invented fact. This track is import-and-normalize done without ever falsifying precision.

  7. 07🔌Reuse Before Invention

    0/5 lessons

Bind to the canonical brain and editor — never grow a second one to drift

Waystone is small on purpose. It treats the whole CWK ecosystem as its component library and invents only the travel-specific gap. This track works through the discipline that keeps it small: the Adopt-Extract-Adapt-Invent ledger, the refusal to grow its own brain (Ask Pippa binds to a canonical cwkPippa conversation), the field-hardened Sidekick contract, the Rekindle round trip that keeps prose where prose belongs, and the rule underneath all of it — integration reuses a sibling's capability without ever transferring its ownership.

  8. 08🧳Own Your Journey

    0/4 lessons

History compounds — the fourth trip begins with the memory of the first three

The closing discipline. Everything in this quest — the consultation surface, the projections, the four temporal states, the field capture, Carve, the reuse ledger — exists so that history can compound: each journey improves the context available for the next one. This track lands that payoff, separates chronological travel truth from narrative video truth, holds the concrete-first line against premature architecture, and closes on the thesis the whole engine was built to prove: own the way you remember.
