Finance lives in small numbers
Open any finance page. Interest rate: 5.25%. Dividend yield: 1.8%. Bond coupon: 0.375%. Mutual fund expense ratio: 0.04%. The numbers are small. They live to the right of the decimal point.
And here's the thing: most people are bad at small numbers. Not because they're stupid — because we don't grow up using them. Grocery prices, ages, distances — those are whole numbers. 0.005 doesn't feel like a real quantity. So when finance starts throwing them around, eyes glaze.
This lesson is the friend-up with small numbers. Twenty-five minutes here saves headaches forever.
The picture — three rulers measuring the same thing
Three units, one quantity. Imagine three rulers laid side by side, all measuring the same physical length but with different tick spacing:
- Decimal ruler — ticks at 0, 0.01, 0.02, … one hundredth per tick.
- Percent ruler — ticks at 0%, 1%, 2%, … one "per cent" per tick. The Latin per centum literally means "per hundred."
- BP ruler — ticks at 0 bp, 1 bp, 2 bp, … finance's finest standard ruler, 100 times finer than the percent ruler.
Same length, three rulers, three readings. The conversions are just which ruler are you reading.
"Per cent" already tells you the percent↔decimal conversion
Per centum = "per hundred." So "5%" literally means "5 per hundred" = 5/100 = 0.05. The conversion is baked into the word.
Picture: a 10×10 grid of 100 tiny squares. 5% = 5 of those squares shaded. Decimal 0.05 = 5/100 written as a fraction. Percent ↔ decimal is ×100 one way, ÷100 the other. The two rulers are 100 apart.
BP exists because percent isn't fine enough
Finance does so much business inside one percent that "1%" is too coarse. Someone invented a ruler with marks 100 times finer:
Picture: take any single 1% square from the grid above and zoom in. That one box now has its own 100 sub-boxes — those are basis points. The percent ruler has 100 ticks per "unit"; the bp ruler has 10,000 ticks across the same range. Same picture, finer ruler.
So percent ↔ bp is ×100 one way, ÷100 the other. 50 bp = 0.5%: half of one percent box, expressed on the finer ruler, reads as 50.
Decimal ↔ bp — the conversion that's 4 places, not 2
Now the trap. People who memorize "shift two places" sometimes assume the same shift works between any two of the three units. It doesn't.
Walk the ladder:
- Decimal → percent: ×100 (shift 2 right).
0.05 → 5% - Percent → bp: ×100 (shift 2 right).
5% → 500 bp - So decimal → bp directly = ×100 × ×100 = ×10,000 (shift 4 right).
0.05 → 500 bp
The two outer rulers (decimal and bp) are 100 × 100 = 10,000 apart. Two ×100 steps stacked. That's why the shift is four places, not two.
Picture: walking down two rulers in a row. Each step is ×100. Two steps in the same direction stack — they don't repeat the same shift. 0.0001 = 0.01% = 1 bp is the four-place chain in one frame.
Reflex table — confirmation, not explanation
With the ruler picture in hand, the table is just confirmation:

Three columns = three rulers. Read across each row to see the same quantity in three units. Shift counts: percent ↔ decimal = 2 places, percent ↔ bp = 2 places, decimal ↔ bp = 4 places = 2 + 2. Sum the steps along the chain. The picture explains why; the table just confirms.
Yield — what it actually means
You'll hear "yield" everywhere. Bond yield. Dividend yield. Earnings yield. Yield to maturity. The word sounds technical, but underneath: yield is just the income side of an asset, expressed as a percent of its price.
So if a bond paying $40 a year costs $1,000, its yield is 40 / 1000 = 0.04 = 4%. If a stock paying a $2 annual dividend trades at $100, its dividend yield is 2 / 100 = 2%. It's a fraction. It's a percent. Same trio as before — pick whichever ruler you want.
What's special is yield is always small. A 4% yield is good. A 10% yield is suspicious — usually something's broken about the company or the bond. We get used to bond yields between 0.5% and 6%. Stock dividend yields between 0% and 5%. Anything outside that range is unusual.
So the yield world lives almost entirely in single-digit percent or fractions thereof — exactly the small-numbers zone we just got friendly with.
The takeaway
Three rulers — decimal, percent, bp — measure the same quantity at different fineness. "Per cent" = "per hundred" hands you the percent↔decimal conversion. BP is the percent ruler ×100 finer. The chain decimal → percent → bp is two ×100 steps, so decimal ↔ bp directly is ×10,000 (4-place shift). When you see 50 bp, your brain reads three things at once: 50 bp = 0.5% = 0.005. Three readings, one quantity. After a few lessons this becomes invisible.
yield가 10%보다 커지면 감탄하지 말자. 엄마세모(B)가 시장의 위험을 견디지 못하고 무너지면, 가로선은 견고한 사선이 되는게 아니고 균열의 시작일 뿐이다. 비정상적으로 큰 숫자를 마주한다면, 에너지의 크기(P)가 왜 파괴되었는지 의심하고 엄마세모 받침대를 먼저 조사해야 한다.
