The headline structure of pseudoscience

Pseudoscience isn't a category of topics. It's a structure of claims — and you can recognize it without being a domain expert in whatever field it's invading. Pseudoscience makes claims that look scientific but don't have a model with a known limit. They sound impressive, they cite studies, they use technical vocabulary, they often get details right. The structural test isn't do they sound smart? It's can you ask where the model breaks?

If a claim has no breaking point — if no possible observation could make the proponent say "my theory was wrong" — it's not science, regardless of how scientific it sounds. Karl Popper named this falsifiability — a real scientific theory says what would falsify it. Pseudoscience usually doesn't.

Five common shapes

  1. Cherry-picked studies. Cite three studies that support the claim, ignore fifteen that don't. Real science weighs the totality of evidence.
  2. Unfalsifiable claims. "Crystals heal you, but only if you believe." Failure is blamed on insufficient belief; the claim can't be tested.
  3. Misused statistics. Correlation presented as causation (track 0 lesson 4). Tiny effect sizes presented as significant. Anecdotal evidence presented as data.
  4. Quantum word-salad. Real quantum mechanics is technical. "Quantum healing," "quantum consciousness," "quantum vibrations" almost always misuse the vocabulary. The test: does the claim involve actual wave functions, actual measurements, actual quantum scales? If no, it's borrowing the word for marketing.
  5. Conspiracy structure. Any disagreement from authorities is itself evidence the claim is right ("they don't want you to know"). The structure is unfalsifiable by design — every refutation strengthens it.

The single test that handles most of them

You can't fact-check every claim against domain expertise. You can run one test: what would convince this person they're wrong? If the answer is "nothing" or "only personal experience proving it" or "only if they admit they're wrong," you're outside science. If the answer is "if studies X, Y, Z were done with these methodologies and showed these results, I'd update," you're inside science.

Most pseudoscience identifies itself when you push on this. The proponent's response usually shifts from "here's the evidence" to "why do you doubt?" That shift is the tell.

What to do with the filter

Don't be aggressive about it. Most people who hold pseudoscientific beliefs aren't dishonest — they're inside a rabbit hole. The filter isn't for confronting; it's for inoculating. Run it on what you read, what you hear, what you're tempted to share. Run it gently on yourself. The biggest pseudoscience risk for any person is the one they don't know they hold. The filter helps you find your own first.

Pick a belief you hold strongly about health, nutrition, productivity, money, or politics. Ask yourself: what specifically would convince me I'm wrong? Be concrete. If you can't name conditions, the belief isn't scientific yet — it might still be true, but you're holding it on faith, not evidence. That's not bad; it's just useful to know.
