The teaching metaphor that's almost literal
If you've played Baldur's Gate or any tabletop RPG, you know the D20 — a 20-sided die rolled to determine whether an action succeeds. Roll high, the action goes well. Roll low, it fails. The DM (dungeon master) describes the world based on the outcomes. The story is built one roll at a time, with the dice as the engine of branching.
Now zoom out. In quantum mechanics, every measurement is a probabilistic collapse. The wave function gives the odds; the outcome is the roll. The world that follows is built one collapse at a time. The universe is, in a structural sense, a long sequence of rolls — each measurement a die landing on one of its faces, weighted by the wave function.
The metaphor's exact fit
- The wave function is the loaded die. Before the roll, all faces are present; after the roll, one face is up. The probabilities aren't equal — like a weighted die, certain outcomes are more likely than others, set by the physics.
- Measurement is the throw. Any sufficiently strong interaction with a large environment counts as the throw. The cat opens the box. The photon hits the plate. The neuron fires. The decision is made.
- The outcome is the face shown. One specific value out of the distribution. The other amplitudes don't reappear in your branch.
- The DM is, basically, decoherence. Once the throw resolves, the world goes on as if that's what happened. The narrative continues with the result.
Why this isn't "random in the bad sense"
People sometimes recoil from quantum probability because it sounds like the universe is arbitrary. It isn't. The probabilities are precisely calculable from the physics. The wave function gives you the exact distribution of possible outcomes for any given measurement. You can predict averages, variances, frequencies, correlations — all to extraordinary precision. The only thing you can't predict is the specific outcome of a specific roll.
This is the same shape as competent probability everywhere. A weather forecaster can't tell you whether it'll rain at exactly 2:47 PM tomorrow on your block, but they can tell you with high confidence that you'll get 5-10mm of rain over the day. The universe is a probabilistic mechanism with calculable distributions and uncalculable specific rolls. That's not chaos; it's calibrated indeterminacy.
Why it changes everyday life, lightly
If the universe is a sequence of rolls, two attitudes shift slightly:
- Specific outcomes don't say what the dice were. A success doesn't mean the odds were great; a failure doesn't mean they were bad. The roll is a sample. The distribution is the truth.
- Adjusting the loaded-ness of the die is the move. You can't control the specific roll, but you can shift the weights. Habits, preparation, relationships, character — all shift the amplitude of certain futures. You're not predicting the dice; you're loading them, gently, over time.
The path integral from the previous lesson plus the D20 metaphor here: your life is a long sum over weighted rolls, and the only thing fully under your control is the weights. That's a more honest model of agency than "control the outcome" or "surrender to fate." The middle path is calibrated probabilistic engagement.
