Space itself — the 95% we can't see

The thing we used to call "empty space"

In school, you learned that space is mostly empty — vast distances of vacuum between stars and galaxies. That picture is roughly the picture from track 1 (frame): nature carved at the joints we can perceive. Nothing visible there → must be empty.

Modern cosmology has thoroughly broken that frame. What we used to call empty space is filled with dark matter and dark energy that together account for ~95% of the universe. The stars and gas and planets we see — all the visible matter — is about 5% of the total. The rest is invisible, and we don't fully understand it.

Dark matter — the gravitational glue

Galaxies rotate. Stars on the outer edges should be flung off because gravity from the visible mass isn't enough to hold them. They aren't. So either gravity works differently at galactic scales (very few people believe this anymore) or there's more mass we can't see. The unseen mass, dubbed dark matter, accounts for about 27% of the universe's total mass-energy. It's gravitationally clumpy, doesn't interact with light at all (hence "dark"), and we have multiple lines of evidence for it from galaxy rotation, gravitational lensing, and the CMB. We don't know what particle it's made of. Decades of search have ruled out many candidates; the answer is still open.

Dark energy — the universe is accelerating

In the 1990s, supernova observations revealed that the universe's expansion is accelerating, not slowing down. Something is pushing space apart faster as time goes on. The simplest model attributes this to a constant energy density of space itself — dark energy — about 68% of the total mass-energy. We don't know what it is. The leading candidate is the cosmological constant, a kind of vacuum energy. The leading puzzle is that quantum field theory's prediction for vacuum energy is wrong by 120 orders of magnitude. (One of the deepest unsolved problems in physics.)

What this does to the word *space*

The word *space* in everyday speech still carries the old meaning — vast, empty, separating things. The actual cosmos is dense with stuff we can't see directly. Calling it "space" was a category we drew because we couldn't see the rest. The category was a frame, not nature. Now we know the frame is wrong, but we still use the word. That's how language lags discovery.

Two consequences:

  • The most confident scientific claims of the late 19th century ("physics is essentially complete") were wrong because the unmeasured was 95% of what was there. There's no reason to think we're not in a similar position now, with whatever we currently can't measure.
  • Whenever you hear a confident claim about the structure of reality, ask: what fraction of reality does this claim cover? If the answer is "the visible 5%", that's not nothing — it's just a small fraction.

Closing the scale track

You started with the speed of light and ended with 95% of the universe being invisible to us. The thread connecting them is the same one as in track 1: your viewpoint is not the universe's anchor. The universe doesn't care about your scale, your time, your sense of where things are. It runs on its own laws, at its own scales, with most of itself outside your perception.

The next track (probability) drops to the opposite extreme — the very small, where Newton breaks for the second reason and quantum mechanics takes over. Where this track was about *the cosmos in macro*, the next is about *the substrate in micro*. Both are engines Newton's wall opens onto.

Look up the latest dark matter / dark energy news (it changes year to year). Notice the gap between the headlines ("new candidate ruled out") and the underlying state ("we still don't know what it is"). The 95% is genuinely unknown. The 5% is what we built modern science on.
