The school answer, and the real one
Ask 100 adults what science is. Most will say: "the systematic study of the natural world." Memorized definition, school version, 95% answer. It's not wrong, but it's empty — like answering "what is music?" with "organized sound."
Here's the 5% answer: science is making models of how the world works, and being honest about where each model breaks. Two halves. Most people remember the first half (the model). They forget the second (the breaking point). The second half is where the lens lives.
A model is a guess that earns its keep
Newton's gravity is a model. It says F = G·m₁·m₂/r². For 250 years it predicted everything from cannonballs to comets. Then someone measured Mercury's orbit precisely and found it didn't match. Newton's model didn't get wrong — it earned its keep on Earth and in the solar system at low speeds. But it stopped being the deepest answer. Einstein's general relativity took over for high gravity and big distances. Newton still works for engineering. Einstein still gets called when GPS satellites need correcting.
That's how science actually moves. Not "discovery of truth" — that's the school framing. It's build a model → push it to its limit → find where it breaks → build a deeper one. The breaking point is the gift. Without it, science would be religion.
Why this matters in 2026
You'll meet headlines about quantum computers, AGI, climate models, mRNA vaccines, dark matter, parallel universes. Most will sound like authority claims. The lens you build here is one question — where does this model break? What is its known limit? What would make it stop working? Answer those, and you stop being a 95% reader of science news.
This quest doesn't make you a scientist. It makes you someone who can read science the way a poker player reads a table — knowing what's known, what's guessed, what's bluff.
