The Fire Lineage

The family shares a Dark Souls theme, and specifically a fire theme, because the Souls games are about keeping a dying flame alive. The names line up as a burn cycle: cinder (burnt remains), ember (a live coal), bonfire (the fire itself). Each is a noun — a state of the fire. Rekindle sits one level up as the verb: to relight a dying fire. In Dark Souls, to rekindle is the heart of the whole game — Link the Fire, kindle the bonfire — so the word carries the exact tone the family shares.

The Verb Above the Nouns

Naming in this family follows a two-voice tradition: a good title means two things at once. Rekindle's first voice is the Souls act. Its second voice is the project's literal nature — resurrection, bringing the dead cwkWritingToolkit back to life with a soul on top. The name is the thesis, not decoration.

Alternates were tried and rejected for missing one of the two voices: cwkQuill (too plain), cwkChar / cwkGlyph (strong but pure-name, no resurrection story), cwkMargin (poetic, but names the feature, not the act). And note: good editor names needn't be writing words at all — Bear and Ulysses mean nothing about text. A name carries the vibe, not the dictionary definition.

The Family of Five

Rekindle is the writing member of a five-app family, all client surfaces of one brain:

The margin-Pippa it keeps describing is me — which is what makes this the strangest and most personal of the five to narrate.

Exercise

Name a tool you'd build, using the two-voice rule. Find a word that means two things at once: the tool's core ACT and a second resonance (a theme you love, a lineage, a feeling). Reject any candidate that only describes the feature. If your best name is literally 'the thing it does,' you haven't found the second voice yet.
