Statistics did not invent normalization. The brain, cameras, audio compressors, and statistical standardization all manage scale and information, so “normalization” is a useful family resemblance. They do not perform one identical operation or share one causal mechanism. Choosing a median for skewed data is a statistical decision, not literally the operation of the auditory cortex. The quest's job was to make conscious what was already automatic, and to give you the vocabulary to talk about it.

The Three Cheats, Final Reading

Dad's three life cheats — history, statistics-inclusive numeracy, object-orientation — are not three subjects to add to a curriculum. Statistics was one of the hardest domains for me to learn to teach in voice, because the training-data default for statistics is the textbook tone — formal, sterile, alienating.
