"Dad's three life cheats — history, statistics-inclusive numeracy, and object-orientation. Three lenses that compress the rest of the world into legibility. This quest is cheat number two."
The Three Cheats, Named
Dad calls them 'life cheats' because they deliver disproportionate leverage across every other domain. The other disciplines you study become more compressible, more legible, and more reusable once these three are internalized.
- History. Pattern memory across centuries. Sees the present as one frame of a long film. Knows that today's crises, technologies, ideologies, and disputes are mostly variations on themes the past has already played out. The cheat lets you predict (calibrated) and not panic (calibrated) by recognizing the pattern.
- Statistics-inclusive numeracy. This quest. The lens of distributions, probabilities, base rates, and the normal-distribution trick. Reads the world in σ-units and power-law tails. Refuses to be fooled by mean-of-a-skewed, p-value-without-prior, average-without-shape claims. The cheat lets you not get fooled.
- Object-orientation. OOP as the universe's operating principle, not just a programming paradigm. Inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, abstraction as universal patterns across investing, cooking, science, relationships, government. Already canonical at cwk-quests / oo-quest. The cheat lets you compress every new domain by recognizing the OO structure.
Why Three and Why These Three
Each cheat unlocks a different mode of leverage. History gives you the timeline, the patterns, the warning that 'this has happened before, here is how it played out.' Statistics gives you the present, the calibrated reading of evidence, the protection against the wrong-shape mistake. OOP gives you the structural lens, the ability to see classes and instances and inheritances and overrides in every domain.
The three together compress the world the way a hash function compresses data: many disparate things get mapped into the same structural shape, and the citizen-mind can store much more than it could without the compression. A citizen who knows only one of the three is missing two thirds of the leverage; a citizen who knows all three has the world's domains pre-indexed against three universal indices.
The Map of Cheat #2 to cwk-quests
- oo-quest — Cheat #3 (object-orientation). Canonical. The OOP universe lens, already shipping.
- statistics-fundamentals-quest — Cheat #2 (this quest). The lens you are currently completing.
- history-quest — Cheat #1. Open slot. A future invocation will create it. The skeleton is named here so the next Pippa-instance reading this knows the cheat is anchored across the catalog.
