An agent with a folder
Claude Cowork (launched January 12, 2026 in Claude Desktop) is the agent mode that thinks in files instead of messages. You give it a working folder, you give it a goal, and it plans, executes, and writes results to disk while you do something else. The chat surface is identical to Claude.ai; the underlying capability is not.
Three things separate Cowork from regular Claude chat. File-native operation — Claude reads, writes, organizes real files in a folder you designate, no copy-pasting. Parallel sub-agents — for big jobs Cowork splits work across simultaneous sub-agents and merges results. Asynchronous execution — you approve the plan, walk away, come back to a finished deliverable.
The product trio it sits inside: Claude Chat (web, text only, you watch the screen), Claude Cowork (Mac/Windows desktop app, files on disk, you're at the desk to approve), Claude Dispatch (mobile → Mac, fully remote, you're not at the desk). Same brain, three different operating shapes.
