Why every living thing on Earth is carbon-based

Life on Earth is carbon-based. So is, almost certainly, life anywhere else in the universe. Why? Because of where carbon sits on the periodic table. Carbon is in group 14, with four electrons in its outermost seat. That means carbon has four hands — four available bonds it can make in any direction. No other common element has this exact combination of valence (four bonds), abundance (made plentifully in stars), and bond stability (strong enough to hold, weak enough to break).

Four hands is what makes chains possible. A carbon atom can bond to another carbon, which can bond to another carbon, and so on, forming chains and rings of any length. Add some hydrogens, oxygens, nitrogens to those chains and you get amino acids. Chain amino acids together and you get proteins. Combine proteins with sugars and you get cells. Add a few billion years of chemistry trying things and you get evolution and us.

The chain is everything

DNA is a chain. RNA is a chain. Proteins are chains of amino acids. Sugars are chains. Lipids have chains. Almost every molecule of life has a carbon backbone running through it. The single architectural feature that makes life possible is carbon's four hands. Take that away and you have no chains, no biology.

Silicon (group 14, just below carbon) also has four hands. So could silicon support life? In theory, yes. In practice, silicon-silicon bonds are weaker, silicon-oxygen bonds are too strong (rocks, not biology), and silicon doesn't form long chains as readily. Carbon hits the sweet spot. Position on the table = life's possibility.

The track converges

Exercise

Look at your hand. Almost every molecule in it has a carbon backbone — the chains that proteins and lipids and sugars and DNA all share. Each carbon atom has four bonds, four hands, holding the chain. You are, in the most literal way, four-handed atoms holding hands across billions of years of star-forging.
