What was here at the beginning
For the first ~380,000 years after the Big Bang, the universe was too hot for atoms to form — just a plasma of free protons, neutrons, electrons. As it cooled, atoms appeared. But almost only two: hydrogen and helium. About 75% H, 24% He, traces of lithium. The early universe was an alphabet with three letters.
Where did the rest of the periodic table come from? Stars. A star is a fusion furnace. Inside its core, hydrogen atoms slam together to make helium, releasing energy (the energy that lights the Sun). Bigger stars then fuse helium into carbon, oxygen, neon, magnesium. Even bigger stars push further — silicon, sulfur, calcium, iron. Every element heavier than helium in the universe was forged inside a star.
Stars die into us
When a massive star runs out of fuel, it collapses, then explodes as a supernova. The explosion does two things: it fuses some elements all the way up to gold, uranium, and beyond, and it scatters all that material into space. That material drifts for millions of years, then collects into clouds, then collapses into new stars and planets — including ours.
The carbon in your bones, the iron in your blood, the calcium in your teeth — every one of those atoms was made inside a star that died billions of years before Earth existed. Carl Sagan said it cleanly: we are made of star stuff. Not as a metaphor. As a literal historical fact about where the atoms in your body came from.
Why this is one of the most beautiful facts
Most facts about the universe are detached from us — they happen far away, in deep time. The fact that you are walking around made of atoms forged in dying stars is the rare exception. You are an emergent layer of an emergent layer of an emergent layer of +1 done by gravity and heat in stellar cores.
The periodic table — that flat chart in your old textbook — is the inventory of what stars have ever made. Position 6 (carbon) and position 8 (oxygen) and position 26 (iron) are not just abstract slots. They're you, your blood, your breath. The universe writing its alphabet into you.
